Mastering the Art of Closet Organizing

How Can I Get More Storage Space In My Small Bathroom Cabinet And Drawers?

Bathrooms of any size are a challenge to organize and keep decluttered. There is so many personal grooming things that you need access to every day from makeup, combs, brushes to toothbrush and tooth paste. Small bathrooms are even harder to use all of the storage space without making the bathroom feel cramped or cluttered.

The typical small bathroom has a vanity with one or if you are fortunate two small drawers with the sink eating up the space for the third larger drawer. Underneath the sink is only large space to work with and the sink’s plumbing is taking up a large amount of the useful space.

Here are several practical solutions on how to make the most use of the space in your bathroom without having to resort to tearing down walls.

Clean And Purge
Take all of the stuff that is currently under the sink out. Line it all up on the bathroom floor. Take about five minutes and create two groups. Decide which of the items you are using and which items you are not using or will most likely never use again. Give away or throw away the group of things that are in the ‘never will use’ pile.

Put in metal or plastic storage shelves under the sink so that you can double up the storage space beneath the vanity sink. Put all of your chemicals, cleaning supplies and shampoo bottles under the sink.

Clean Off The Countertop Clutter
The more stuff that you keep on your counter top the less space you will have when you get ready and the harder it is to find what you need. Not to mention the messier and cluttered your bathroom will look.

Go for the bare minimum look on your countertop: a box of tissue and hand soap. I prefer using a bottle of hand soap instead of a bar because the bar tends to make a mess around it. Everything else needs to be in a drawer or in the medicine cabinet.

Don’t Use Your Medicine Cabinet For Medicine
Medicine cabinets are better suited for storing daily personal groom and hygiene supplies instead of medicine. Use a clear plastic container to store all of your first aid supplies in. Store the first aid supplies in the linen closet. If you have small children in the house, make sure that the first aide supplies are high enough up so that they are out of reach of the little ones.

Create Personal Use Drawers
Give each family member that uses the bathroom their own drawer or cubby for their top ten items. Ten items for personal grooming!? How is that going to work?
It does not sound like very much, but after the basics, (toothbrush, deodorant, hairbrush, comb, face wash, mouthwash) each person still has room left over for a few more items. Everything else must go in their night stand, dresser or closet. But not in the bathroom!

If you don’t have that many drawers, don’t worry, this will still work. Give each family member a cubby or small plastic tray that will hold their top ten items. Store the trays together in a drawer or under the sink.

Utilize The Space Over The Sink
Over the bathroom mirror, if you ignore the bathroom light for a moment is on average twelve to fourteen inches of space. This is dead space that is not being used. Either build a custom cabinet to fit the space or go to the local home improvement store and buy a readymade cabinet that will fit in the space. You may need to relocate the light or change out the light fixture. The little bit of effort will give you at least three cubic feet of additional storage space. That is plenty enough to store soap bottles, conditioner bottles and toilet paper along with other bulky bathroom supplies in.
